A Hawkeye View Of Gotham

Lovely weekend in the city.

Greetings faithful readers.  It's been a lovely weekend in the city, with blue skies and temperatures reaching 70 degrees (in mid-November!)  I've taken advantage of having no major projects right now (i.e. LSAT studying or law school application preparation) by running errands and cleaning out the apartment.  All Christmas decorations are out except my tree which must be assembled.  How hard can it be to put together an artificial 6-foot Canadian Fir from Target?  In the meantime my goals today are to buy a new digital camera and try to find some Yankee World Series champions t-shirts being sold on the streets of New York.  One would think you would find them at every street corner but I suppose I need to go a bit further west for the serious vendors.  I also need new running shoes as I am still using the pair I wore in the marathon LAST YEAR.  This demonstrates how little running I have done in the past 12 months and I aim to kick start my routine again by buying a much needed pair of new running shoes. 

That's all for now but I hope to have more exciting posts in the future once my new camera arrives!

It's never too early...

...to put out Christmas decorations!  Okay, maybe anything before Halloween is too early. But Halloween is OV-VAH which means I can start displaying stuff!   I am putting up a tree this year (artificial) as soon as it arrives from Target.  I shall decorate it with all of the lovely ornaments June gave to me a couple of years ago.  I want everything to look festive for the couple of days in December I'll be entertaining Liz and Scott and Alex before we all head to PA for the holiday.

I've submitted my applications for the University of Minnesota and William Mitchell College of Law.  I'll hear back from UMN by December 1 (admit or deny - no waitlist for Early Decision applicants) and should probably hear something from WMCL in December.  Getting into UMN is a long shot so I am mentally preparing for WMCL next fall!!!  

I went out for Halloween last night.  Sort of.  My friends and I bought tickets and planned on going to a big party at Tavern on the Green, that famous restaurant nestled in Central Park where the marathon finishes every year (in fact this year's marathon is today; runners are pounding across the finish line as I write this.)  I dressed up as a kitty and we all traipsed out in the rain only to stand in line for over an hour in the drizzle.  I was so fed up that I left (and frankly, big crowds like that scare me because you never know when people are going to start to get really pissy.)  I will never understand that whole club "stand in line" mentality.  If you buy a ticket and the party starts at 11pm, you don't want to still be standing outside in the rain at 11:45pm waiting to get in.  I plan on calling and asking for my money back.  And go to house parties going forward.

I got a 162 on the LSAT which is the best score I have ever gotten and I am so happy I can barely type this!!!

Watching the Yankee game...

...we actually won the last one and now we are up 2-1 in the 3rd game of the series.  I am hoping we win tonight so we can move on to L.A.  I went to the law school forum yesterday and it was indeed an interesting and exciting experience.  It was fun visiting the various tables.  Yale had two 2nd year students there - both overweight and unattractive and not very interesting.  Most schools had Admissions Directors at their table so one had to be on their best behavior.  I grabbed materials for several schools, just to browse through, and also stopped and chatted at William Mitchell and U of Minnesota.  I had already met the WMCL guy on my tour over Labor Day so I just stopped by briefly to say hello again and let him know I would be submitting my application soon.  Getting into U of M will be very hard so I spent a bit more time there trying to butter them up.  We shall see what happens.

Bed soon.  I am reading a book on Jack the Ripper - supposedly THE book to read as it contains the most facts and least amount of crap made up by various Ripperologists over the years.  I consider myself a Ripperologist as well as it kills me (haha no pun intended) that we don't know who did it!  I am a Ripperette.  Want to figure out who he is and so annoyed that we will probably never know.

There is a Halloween cookie in the kitchen that is calling my name.

Yankees

Home.  Watching Yankee game on TV.  Second game of series with the Twins and Jeter was just robbed!  Anyway it's Friday night and I am preparing for the Law School Forum tomorrow, being held at the Hilton in Midtown.  Every law school under the sun will have a table there, and I've gotten an email from just about all of them inviting me to visit their table (including Harvard, but nothing from Yale!)  Eh, they just send out mass emails to everybody registered to attend.  I don't have my LSAT score yet and am trying not to think about it because of course there is nothing I can do about it now.  The forum also has various presentations such as "How to Finance a Law Education" and "What Does a Lawyer Really Do"?  It will be a long day. 

I am getting back into running in the Park, which I really missed these past few months.  I tend to go on Tuesday and Thursday nights as that is when the running groups are out.  The Park is pretty full even when it's dark out but I try to play it safe and go when I know there will be a lot of people there.  We are nearing the end of 2009 and in 2010 I want to start competing in races for New York Road Runners again.  It's the only thing that keeps me from ballooning out like a whale!

Yankees are gonna lose this one.

LSAT Ov-vah!

Greetings faithful readers!  The LSAT is finally over and I am breathing a big sigh of relief and anxious to get back to living my life. The test was yesterday; I arrived at the test center (just a few blocks from my apartment) at 8 am and was home by 2 pm.  I wasn't nervous at all, I think mainly due to having taken so many diagnostics (over 10) that I knew what I was getting in to and how to compose myself if something didn't go well.  I think the test itself went about as well as it could have gone so unless I freakishly get some really low score (god help me if I do!) I will just take whatever I get and apply with it.  Score will be emailed to me in about 3 weeks.  By that time the rest of my application should be ready and the LSAT score will be the final piece.  It's all done electronically these days which really makes it easy.  I've told B3 of my intentions to start school next fall, and he is fine with it and is even writing me a letter of recommendation.  I may take a few months off before starting and do something interesting like travel...have never done it before and there are only so many times in your life when you don't have any other obligations.

Now that I have my life back I am going to catch up on my Netflix Queue and also start running again.  I am working out of B3's home these days, which is right across from the Met/Central Park, so I plan on bringing my running stuff and going right after work, and then walking home from there.  As for Netflix, I watched "Atonement" yesterday, will watch "Slumdog Millionaire" today, and have the first season of "Mad Men" arriving tomorrow. 

It's raining here in NYC so I am just puttering around the apartment and tending to things I have been putting off.  Nermal is doing well.  She had a little scratch on her chin for a while which bled and eventually resulted in a bloody scab falling off onto one of my pillows. Delightful!  But she is fine now.  Aaaah, kitt-ehs...

Here I am!

Greetings faithful readers.  This is just a short note to apologize for my hideously long absence.  As you all I know I am studying as much as I can despite working full time and tending to Nermal's needs, so I don't have a lot of spare time for fun things like posting to my Blog.  I assure everybody that all is well and I will be much more communicative after September 26. I will also have a new camera at that point so I hope to continue posting pictures of Nermal and other things I know to be of vital interest to my dear readers. 

I will quickly say that I had a lovely trip visiting all the family in Canada and I look forward to going again soon.  New York City Ballet is not in season right now, but they will be back in late November for an Opening Night Gala and then many weeks of Nutcracker.  The Winter 2010 Season has just been posted and includes FIVE full-lengths ballets, very unusual for NYCB.  We will see Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo + Juliet, A Midsummers Night Dream, and Jewels.  My guess is they are trying to get some butts in the seats this season before they slowly transition back to a more repertory-friendly season.  By that time all my studying will be over and I will be able to indulge like the ballet-loving maniac that I am.

Nermal is doing well.  She continues to eat kibble and sleep most of the day (as evidenced by my many weekend days spent at home recently studying; cats truly do seem to sleep ALL THE TIME.)  

All is good with my job and I expect my boss to be back in NYC after Labor Day starting a new endeavor (as yet undetermined).  I will be a part of whatever he decides to do.  I remain employed!

Latest Celebrity Sighting...

Finally, after 9 years of living in NYC, I have had a random run-in with Derek Jeter!  Yes.  It is true.  I was sitting at the Starbucks on 2nd Avenue and 74th Street earlier today when he walked in with Jorge Posada.  Nobody paid them much attention as they ordered their drinks and stood waiting.  He caught my eye; I smiled, and he smiled back!  Then they left.  Pretty cool.  I shall add him to my list of celebrities sighted in NYC. 

Oh, and I think we put this in the Celebrity / Non-Rat category.
